Prince still in a critical condition
It may take as long as the end of the coming week before doctors can give a firm prognosis about prince Johan Friso’s chances of survival after being hit by an avalanche while skiing in Austria on Friday.
The prince’s condition remains stable but he is still in a very criticial condition, the state information service RVD said on Sunday afternoon.
Queen Beatrix visited her second son again on Sunday accompanied by Friso’s wife Mable. They later returned to the hotel in the resort of Lech where the rest of the family is staying.
Coma
Neurologist Michaël Kuiper of the Leeuwarden medical centre told the Telegraaf it is not unusual for patients who have been reanimated to be kept with a low body temperature and in a medically induced coma for some time before being brought round again.
After several days, the temperature is then brought back up to normal and the patient is brought round, he said.
It has since emerged the prince was wearing a helmet when skiing off piste with an old friend from the hotel in Lech. He was under the snow for at least 15 minutes.
