A majority of MPs back a change in the law to always treat sex with a child under the age of 12 as rape, according to media reports.

MPs from the ruling CDA and VVD have submitted draft legislation to change the law on sex with minors so the offence is treated more seriously. At the same time, the maximum jail term will be increased to 15 years.
Sex with children is currently classified as ‘child abuse’.
The proposal will be sent to the Council of State for its recommendations shortly.
