Around three-quarters regard the New Year fireworks as a public nuisance, the research showed.
Arno Bonte, who sits on Rotterdam city council, and David Rietveld of The Hague have been campaigning for some time for a ban on firework sales. In 2009, they collected 65,000 signatures to force a parliamentary debate on the issue.
