Sven Kramer returns to form with Europe allround title
Sven Kramer has taken the European allround speed skating title for the fifth time in his career. Kramer took the 10km– the final event of the competition – to beat fellow team member Jan Blokhuijsen.
The win means a return to form for the Dutchman who missed last season through injury. Norway’s Havard Bøkko was third.
Protests
Kramer and Blockhuijsen had to wait for their titles to be confirmed after protests from the Norwegian camp.
The Norwegians had protested that Blockhuijsen had moved one of the line blocks and that Kramer had employed a ‘kick finish’. Both were rejected.
Women’s event
In the women’s event, Irene Wust was the highest placed Dutch woman in bronze position.
The Czech Republic’s Martina Sábliková took gold, her fourth European title.
The men’s competition involves races of 500m, 1,500m, 5km and 10km, the women’s 500m, 1,500m, 3km and 5km.
