Storm-force winds cause damage, but mostly minor incidents

The south-westerly storm-force winds which swept over northern parts of the country on Tuesday afternoon led to several hundred reports of damage, but most were minor incidents, Nos television said.

The strongest winds were recorded on the Wadden Sea, where Force 11 gales battered the island of Vlieland.
Tilburg based insurance company Interpolis said it had over 200 reports of damage, mostly involving falling trees or branches and broken windows. Interpolis expects the total to rise as the evening progresses and is keeping its phone lines open.
Travel
There were no serious problems reported at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport although some flights to and from Britain were delayed and cancelled.
Train travel was disrupted in places and services between Deurne and Helmond were halted because a tree was on the track. The daily ferry service from IJmuiden to Newcastle was also delayed because of high seas.
There were no serious injuries, Nos television said.
The KNMI weather bureau withdrew its code orange severe weather warning for Noord-Holland and Friesland at 17.00 but said the strong winds would continue throughout the evening.
