Senior police official on drink-driving charges
A senior Rotterdam police official was caught driving with four times the permitted level of alcohol in his blood on New Year’s Eve, according to media reports on Tuesday.
The Volkskrant says Jan Hoogstraten will appear in court on Wednesday and is already the subject of an internal police investigation.
According to a police spokesman, Hoogstraten was walking home with his wife when she fell. Thinking it took too long for help to get there, Hoogstraten went home to fetch his car. By the time he got back, help had already arrived and a police officer, seeing he was drunk, breathalysed him.
Hoogstraten is in charge of policing major events in Rotterdam, the Telegraaf said.
