Most primary and seconday schools made a loss in 2010
Teaching union AOb announced on Tuesday that two-thirds of primary and secondary schools made a loss in 2010, the most recent year for which figures are available.
Primary schools booked a combined loss of €126m and secondary schools were €73m in the red.
In 2009, half of primary schools made a loss. This increased in 2010 to two-thirds. For secondary schools the figures show a rise from 40% to 62%.
Schools say they have enough financial reserves at the moment but they will have to make savings.
This is a first look at 2010’s figures. Details on individual schools will be released in the summer.
Vocational colleges, hbo colleges and universities finished 2010 in the black.
