Delft University dean resigns over expenses claim
Delft University dean Marco Waas has resigned over a €27,000 expenses claim for an office at his home after it transpired part of the costs relate to his wife, who runs a business from home, the NRC reported on Friday.
University management board spokesman Dirk Jan van den Berg said the claim shows ‘unacceptable conflict of interests in the way Waas declared his expenses.’
Waas, 51, is repaying €15,000 and has pledged to make no more expenses claims until his formal departure on April 1. He joined the materials, mechanical and maritime engineering faculty from the corporate sector.
Business
Last year it emerged that Waas had been involved in awarding contracts on behalf of the university to companies run by his wife.
The new scandal emerged after the NRC obtained copies of Waas’ expenses claims and found dozens of bills directed at Waas’ wife and her companies, mainly for computer and internet costs.
Van den Berg told the NRC Waas had signed an agreement with the board in 2004 that he could claim €12,000 a year in expenses. ‘This would appear to be part of his pay offer,’ Van den Berg said.
