Cleaners go on strike after pay talks stalemate

Industrial action by cleaners which began on Monday is the biggest campaign in the sector’s history, according to the FNV trade union federation.

The union is campaigning for better sick pay – at the moment cleaners are not paid for the first two days they are off work – and more time to complete their work.
Employers argue the union’s demands are unrealistic and will lead to an increase in labour costs of some 12%.
The pay deal which expired at the end of 2011 was finally sealed in April 2010 after nine weeks of strikes.
The current campaign will start with small-scale strikes. On Thursday, a major company will be targeted, but the union declined to give further details, Nos television said.
