Bronze statue thieves strike again
Rhenen town council is removing two bronze statues from public spaces after a bronze of the writer Simon Carmiggelt and his wife Tiney was stolen from opposite the town hall.
The life-size work, unveiled in 1990, emphasises Carmiggelt’s connections with the town, where he often wrote. It was sawn off at the feet, and police suspect metal thieves are to blame.
Last week a large bronze horse was stolen from outside the library in the town of Dieren on the other side of the Veluwe national park.
So far Rhenen has removed a large bronze featuring queen Beatrix on a bike and a monument to local Jews who died in World War II.
