Amsterdam has worst ‘welfare to work’ results

Some 30,000 people who were claiming welfare benefits at the end of 2009 found jobs in 2010, 9% of the total, according to national statistics office CBS.

Of the local authorities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, Zaanstad and Zoetermeer topped the list. In Zaanstad 14 % of the 2,500 people on welfare benefits (bijstand) found a job. In Zoetermeer the percentage was slightly lower.
Amsterdam and Utrecht came out worst in the survey. In Amsterdam only 6% of people on welfare went back to work while Utrecht showed a marginally higher percentage.
The CBS said the number of years a person has been on benefits and the lack of work in some regions are a negative influence on the chances of finding a job.
Local authorities are in charge of getting people who claim welfare benefits back to work.
