1,400 Dutch woman have suspect PIP breast implants
Some 1,400 Dutch women have been given breast implants from the French brand PIP which used industrial grade silicon filling, according to health ministry figures.
In total, over 2,700 implants are in circulation – around 100 women were given one implant following surgery, the figures show.
The Dutch association for esthetic plastic surgery is advising women to have the implants removed. ‘If an implant is damaged it should be removed immediately,’ chairman Berend van der Lei told Nos television.
‘We would also urge women with implants which are undamaged to have them removed, relatively urgently. The situation is not acute but they should make an appointment,’ he said.
France
Health minister Edith Schippers has advised women with the implants to consult their doctor.
France banned the PIP implants, found to be made with industrial silicone, in 2010 and 30,000 women were advised to have them removed.
In Britain, a government review said there is no evidence to recommend the routine removal of PIP implants from women.
