Housing corporations will have to offer 75% of their homes for sale

The social affairs ministry plans to force housing corporations to offer to sell at least 75% of their housing supply to sitting tenants, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Wednesday, quoting a source in The Hague.

The paper says housing organisations will only be able to put fewer homes up for sale with the express permission of the minister.
The plan will be discussed by ministers at Friday’s cabinet meeting.
Strategy
Housing corporations have already condemned the idea.
‘We are not against selling tenants their homes, but we do not agree with letting tenants determine which properties we should sell,’ Marc Calon, chairman of sector umbrella group Aedes told the paper. ‘If that is the case, we will no longer be able to follow strategic policy.’
The paper says tenants will be offered their homes for 90% of the official valuation. The government hopes giving tenants the right to buy will stimulate home ownership and reduce the number of homes in the rent-controlled sector.
If the government goes ahead with the plan and it is approved by parliament, housing corporations will take the matter to court, Calon told the paper.
