The university wanted to increase the percentage of female professors from 8% to 17% and set aside extra funding in 2010 and 2011 to pay for 12 new chairs. Men were not allowed to apply.
The commission said that while women can be given preferential treatment in law, excluding men from the application process entirely is not allowed.
According to Trouw, just 13% of professors at Dutch universities are female, which is very low in European terms.
