Dutch celebs call for amnesty for child refugees
A group of Dutch celebrities have started a pre-Christmas campaign for an amnesty for young asylum seekers who are faced with deportation.
Celebs such as Marco Borsato, Jorgen Raymann, Thomas Acda, Filemon Wesselink and Angela Groothuizen have launched the campaign which has the support of some MPs.
Between 1,000 and 2,000 face deportation even though they have lived here so long that their roots are now in the Netherlands.
The plight of young refugees hit the headlines earlier this year with the pending deportation of Angolan youth Mauro who faces deportation even though he has lived in the Netherlands since he was nine.
‘If we don’t do something, their future will lie in Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Angola,’ the campaign says. ‘Countries where they don’t speak the language, know no-one and are strangers.’
