Defence minister supports community service for all youngsters

Defence minister Hans Hillen supports the idea of compulsory community service for all teenagers and thinks the concept should be seriously investigated, the minister said in an interview with RTL7.

Youngsters should spend a year doing useful work for the community, whether in military service, healthcare or the environment, Hillen is quoted as saying by the Volkskrant.
This investment would teach youngsters that ‘society also belongs to them,’ Hillen said.
The Netherlands scrapped military service in 1996 but has since introduced short community service programmes for secondary school pupils.
