Christmas day supermarket opening ‘a modest success’
The decision by several supermarket groups to open the doors of a limited number of stores on Christmas day was a modest success, news agency ANP reports.
Harrie Westra of the Vomar supermarket chain said the 10 stores it opened in Amsterdam and Almere served between 10,000 and 15,000 customers. Shoppers not only picked up forgotten items but entire Christmas meals, he said.
Jumbo will release its sales figures at a later date, the company, which had some eight stores open, said.
Nor was it difficult to find staff. Volunteers who opted to work on Sunday got triple pay, ANP said.
