A4 at Leiderdorp is worst traffic black spot

The A4 at Leiderdorp, where the main motorway to The Hague crosses the Old Rhine river, is the worst traffic black spot in the Netherlands, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

In total, motorists wasted 1.6 million hours waiting in traffic jams on that particular stretch of road. It also topped the 2010 ranking, drawn up by the traffic information service VID.
Other main black spots were the A50 by Ewijk west of Nijmegen. and the Amsterdam A10 ring road in the run-up to the Coen tunnel. Both these stretches of road are undergoing roadworks, the Telegraaf said.
Congestion
Meanwhile, according to the motoring organisation ANWB, the traffic congestion went down by 25% last year. Congestion is calculated by multiplying the length of the jam by the length of time it lasted.
Good weather and the use of extra lanes on the A1 and A9 helped reduce jams, which were worst on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the ANWB said.
