Wilders says ‘no’ again to more cuts, apart from development aid

It will be ‘extremely difficult’ to reach agreement with the minority government over more cuts next year, Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-Islam PVV and coalition alliance partner, said via microblogging service Twitter on Thursday.

The VVD Liberals, Christian Democrats and PVV will only be able to reach a deal if €4bn extra is cut from development aid, Wilders said.
The PVV has an agreement to support the minority cabinet on economic policy in return for tougher immigration rules.
Recession

However, it is becoming increasingly likely that the government will be forced to find extra cuts, on top of the €18bn agreed in last year’s coalition accord.
New figures from the national statistics office earlier this week show the economy contracted in the third quarter. If the economy contracts further in the final quarter, the Netherlands will officially be in recession.
Prime minister Mark Rutte (VVD) and finance minister Jan Kees de Jager (CDA) have also warned that more cuts in government spending may be inevitable.
Earlier this month, broadcaster RTLZ reported that the three parties are set to reopen negotiations on further cuts in early 2012.
