VVD wants to make it easier to vote abroad
Steps must be taken to make it easier for Dutch nationals who live abroad to vote during the elections, according to parliamentarians from the right-wing Liberal VVD.
Some 500,000 Dutch nationals living abroad have the right to vote but at the last general election only 33,000 did so, VVD MP Joost Taverne is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
Complicated procedures and the fact voters must use a red pencil to cast their vote are among the factors which should be changed, Taverne said.
‘It is ridiculous that it is made so difficult for Dutch people who live in another country to vote, while it is their democratic right,’ he said.
If home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner does not say he plans to tackle overseas voting during this week’s debate on the home affairs ministry budget, Taverne said he will draft his own legislation.
