Unemployment rises to 5.8%
The number of people out of work in the Netherlands rose by 17,000 to 455,000 in October, taking the jobless to 5.8%, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.
That means unemployment is back at the same level as in February 2010. In particular, there was a sharp increase in people aged 25 to 45 losing their jobs.
Most jobs went in the civil service, where more women work, CBS economist Peter Hein van Mulligen told the Telegraaf.
During the last recession, more men than women lost their jobs because the turmoil largely affected the construction and manufacturing industries.
However, CBS research shows that the construction, industrial and business services sectors all expect to shed staff in the final quarter of this year.
