Students go to court over €3,000 ‘fine’ for slow students
The three big student organisations are taking the government to court over its plans to make slow students pay €3,000 a year more in college fees, the Volkskrant reports.
The government has brought in the extra fee for students who take more than a year too long to complete their first degree. The extra fees, which come on top of the basic €1,700 college charge, kick in next academic year.
Students argue the extra fees are a fine not a fee and will make it difficult for some people to go to university. They also point out the government has changed the rules for people already studying.
The extra fee will apply to all students, not just those who start studying next year.
