Strict Christians want their own local currency

Local councillors from the staunchly Protestant ChristenUnie and SGP want to introduce their own currency in the Noordoostpolder, north east of Amsterdam.

The currency would boost the local economy, councillor Leo Voorberg is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
The new currency would be named the Schokker and would only be legal tender inside the local area. A schokker is a type of Dutch fishing boat, possibly named after the former island of Schokland which became part of the Noordoostpolder when the land was drained.
Voorberg insists the idea is not a publicity stunt and plans to present it at a council meeting on Thursday, ANP says.
