PVV wants Mr Smith back in the classroom
The populist PVV party is planning to introduce a motion which would stop pupils using the familiar je form to talk to their teachers.
PVV MP Harm Beertema is quoted in the Telegraaf as saying the measure would restore the authority of teachers in the classroom and create a professional distance between teacher and pupil. ‘Using je and first names is so 1970s,’ Beertema said.
According to the Volkskrant, teaching union CNV Onderwijs supports the idea of pupils addressing their teachers using the formal U form, but also says the party is hypocritical.
This is a reference to the language used by PVV parliamentarians – such as calling ministers ‘completely mad’ – the paper says.
Only when Geert Wilders and his party set a proper example when it comes to good manners ‘then The Hague can tell others what words to use,’ the paper quoted union chairman Michel Rog as saying.
