Phantom councillors should face pay cuts

City and town councillors who fail to turn up to meetings will have their pay cut or stopped altogether if draft legislation drawn up by Labour wins parliamentary approval.

The party has identified at least 12 local and provincial councillors who never turn up to meetings.
In most cases, they have been thrown out of their party but refuse to give up their seat, which means they are still entitled to claim upwards of €1,000 a month for doing nothing, the Telegraaf says.
