Edgar Davids calls for action on racism in football

Former Dutch football star Edgar Davids has called on football leaders to take a stronger stance against racism, CNN reports this week.

Davids told CNN that the problem is not being addressed despite the recent publicity surrounding controversial remarks made by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Blatter was forced to apologise after saying in an interview with CNN that there was no racism on the pitch and that any problems could be resolved with a handshake after the match.
Davids is also unhappy with remarks apparently made to him by former international Johan Cruijff at last weekend’s confrontation between the Ajax members’ council and supervisory board.

Action

Cruijff is alleged to have told Davids he was only on the supervisory board because he is black.
‘There’s a line, and if you have a racist comment somebody has to act upon it. The person who said it has to be punished and later be educated off the pitch,’ Davids told CNN.
‘What Blatter said was inexcusable, but he apologised. Something like that also happened in Holland when Johan Cruyff made a racist comment. He did it but he didn’t apologise.’
