Donner threatened with motion of no confidence over housing

The Labour party is threatening home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner with a motion of no confidence if he ignores a parliamentary majority to make rent-controlled housing more available to people on higher incomes.

At the moment, an upper income level of €33,614 applies to social housing, but European laws allow this to be relaxed, Labour MP Jacques Monasch told tv programme Radar on Monday evening.
Donner has already warned parliament that renegotiating with Brussels on state subsidies could adversely affect the present system.
High rent
The rules mean most households which break the barrier will have to pay at least €652 a month for a home. However, there is a serious shortage of housing with a rent of around that level, particularly in the cities.
The Netherlands has some 400 housing corporations which rent out, maintain and manage 2.4 million homes – around one third of the national housing stock. Most of them are rent-controlled.
Parliament will debate social housing next week.
