CDA calls for tougher checks on migrant labour
EU nationals who come to work in the Netherlands as freelancers or via staffing agencies should have to formally register their intentions before being allowed to start work, according to junior government party CDA.
Officials can then check if they are legally allowed to work in the Netherlands and if they are being paid the proper salary, MP Eddy van Hijum is quoted as saying by website nu.nl.
The party hopes this will stop dubious employment agencies bringing in Eastern and central European workers and undercutting Dutch workers in terms of pay.
‘Eastern Europeans can work in the Netherlands as freelancers or on contracts but it is difficult to verify if they are registered as such in their country of origin,’ Van Hijum said.
Parliament is debating the results of a parliamentary investigation into labour migration later on Tuesday.
