Beating up burglar is attempted murder, says prosecution department
A 43-year-old man who is suspected of seriously injuring a burglar by beating him with a baseball bat is to face charges of attempted murder, the public prosecution department said in a statement on Thursday.
Four men were involved in the attack on the 50-year-old burglar who is currently in a coma in hospital. The three others, aged 31 to 61, have been released from custody but are still considered suspects, the department said.
The four were standing guard at the Frans Otten stadium in Amsterdam after it had been broken into several times. According to the Volkskrant, part of the attack may have been recorded on a security camera.
The attack, which took place at the weekend, prompted Socialist and GroenLinks MPs to question the government’s tough talking on the victims of crime.
New government guidelines say that people who defend themselves against a burglar or armed robber should no longer be arrested as a matter of course.
