VVD wants to penalise charities ‘which break the law’

VVD and PVV parliamentarians have called for a five-year freeze on charitable tax breaks for organisations caught breaking the law, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.

The call follows claims that environmental organisation Greenpeace may have endangered public safety with a protest against nuclear waste transport last week. The public prosecution department is looking into the incident.
VVD MP Matthijs Huizing says he plans to call for such a ban when the government’s tax plans for 2012 are debated in parliament.
Greenpeace campaign director Joris Thijssen pointed out that the two parties support the building of a second nuclear power station in the Netherlands. ‘They are trying to silence Greenpeace with their tax plans,’ Thijssen is quoted as saying in the Telegraaf.
