Shoplifting, lost stock cost shops over €1bn last year

Shoplifting, theft by staff and lost stock cost Dutch retailers €1.26bn last year, according to the new Global Retail Theft Barometer.


This is 6.6% up on 2009, the Centre for Retail Research, which carried out the survey said. The increase is in line with global average increase but below the 7.8% increase recorded in Europe as a whole.
In the Netherlands, shoplifting accounted for €633m, theft by staff €370m and mistakes and lost stock €258m.
Clothing accessories, expensive cosmetics and cheese head the global list of favourite items to steal.
The research is based on questionnaires filled in by 1,187 major retailers in 43 countries.
