PVV key in ‘tax the queen’ vote
The role of Geert Wilders’ PVV will be crucial when MPs vote whether or not to end the royal family’s tax privileges, Trouw reports on Wednesday.
The royal family will have to pay tax, pay rent on their palaces and lose their right to free air travel if proposals from the Labour party get majority support in parliament.
The ruling CDA and VVD oppose the move, as do the minor Christian parties, but the coalition will need the PVV’s support to block it.
In the past, the PVV has been vociferous in its calls for an end to the role of the monarchy in government.
Prime minister
However, party spokesman Andre Elissen is quoted by Trouw as saying he wanted first to hear what prime minister Mark Rutte says about the issue. ‘Then the door will be open for concrete steps,’ he said.
The PVV has a formal alliance with the minority cabinet in terms of economic and financial policy.
The debate is set to continue on Wednesday.
