Morgan, the young orca rescued last summer in the Wadden Sea is to be transferred to an amusement park on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Junior environment minister Henk Bleker has decided it is too risky to release the animal into the wild, the AD reports on Wednesday. Campaigners had gone to court in an effort to ensure the animal would be put back in the ocean.
Bleker is quoted as saying in the AD that Morgan’s supporters have been unable to convince him that release into the wild is a viable option. ‘Morgan is the type of animal that needs to live in a group in order to find food,’ the minister is quoted as saying.

Transfer
The orca has been cared for at the Harderwijk Dolfinarium since she was found in a severely weakened state in July 2010. The transfer to Spain will take place within a few weeks.
Bleker said the Spanish authorities had assured him the Loro Parque amusement centre meets all EU standards.
Activists say Morgan will become a ‘performing animal’ and point out there have been several incidents involving orcas at the park, including one in which a trainer was killed.
