NS subsidiary wins English rail franchise

The international division of Dutch railway company NS has won the franchise to supply train services in East Anglia, north of London, which will include an ‘important role’ in providing transport during the 2012 Olympics.

Abellio Group was selected by Britain’s transport minister as operator for the Greater Anglia train franchise which will start in February 2012 and run for 29 months. Two British bidders, Go-Ahead Group and Stagecoach also competed to operate the service.
Dutch state-owned Abellion already operates services in several other parts of Britain, as well as Germany and the Czech Republic.
The Greater Anglia franchise includes routes from London to Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
