Groninger museum in financial difficulties

Groninger Museum has a budget shortfall of €1.1m this year and has been put under financial supervision, reports the Dagblad van het Noorden.

The museum has been in financial trouble for years and this has become acute since recent construction work cost €600,000 more than the original budget.
Two financial supervisors have been appointed to ensure subsidies are used properly. Groningen council, which owns the building, provides an annual subsidy of nearly €3.3m and the province €1.2m.
In 2013, the province is to cut the subsidy by €300,000.
