Farmers get round Romanian visa stop
Market gardeners in western parts of Brabant are getting round the ban on employing Romanian fruit and vegetable pickers by contracting Romanian firms to do the work, local paper BN De Stem reports.
This means the Romanian contractor can bring in his own staff to harvest the produce and provide accommodation for them.
Farming organisation ZLTO admits the loophole is being exploited fairly widely but warns growers they may be acting illegally and that the move contravenes the standards of good entrepreneurship.
The government slapped a ban on the employment of Bulgarian and Romanian nationals before the summer, saying growers should take on unemployed Dutch workers instead.
