Elephant returns to his enclosure
A 45-year-old elephant which was pushed by another into the empty moat surrounding their enclosure at Emmen zoo on Sunday climbed out of his own accord in the early hours of Monday morning, the zoo authorities said.
Thousands of visitors were evacuated from the park after the elephant, named Radza, fell into the ditch, because of fears he may climb out the other way into the public areas.
The male, who was born in India, broke part of one tusk in the fall. According to one report, an 18-year-old was hit by flying ivory.
In 2009 a female elephant fell into the moat and had to be destroyed because of her injuries. The moat has since been modified.
