Divers find Dutch World War II submarine
Divers from Australia and Singapore have found the wreck of a Dutch submarine off the north coast of Borneo, the defence ministry confirmed on Monday.
The Hr Ms K XVI was part of the allied forces’ fleet which was trying to stop Japan’s invasion of the Dutch East Indies. It was sunk on Christmas Day 1941 after a torpedo attack from a Japanese submarine.
The find means all but one of the seven Dutch submarines lost during World War II have been found. The exact location of the K XVI will remain a secret to protect the dignity of the dead, the ministry said.
