Budget deficit reaches €16.5bn
The budget deficit reached €16.5bn in the first half of 2011, the same as in the year-earlier period, according to figures from the central statistics agency CBS.
Social budgets had a shortfall of €9bn because of the increasing cost of benefits and healthcare, says the CBS.
Government debt rose to 63.8% of gross national income, one percentage point more than at the end of 2010.
