Albert Heijn locks up the steaks
An Albert Heijn supermarket in Eindhoven has put expensive cuts of beef such as steaks under lock and key in an effort to beat the shoplifters, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.
The chill cabinets carry a few pieces of beef but customers who want to buy more have to ask a member of staff for help.
A spokeswoman for the supermarket group said the local manager had chosen to take this step, adding it is regrettable that the move appears to be necessary.
Earlier this month, a global survey on shoplifting habits revealed cheese and luxury foodstuffs are increasingly likely to be stolen.
