The number of people out of work rose 8,000 to 421,000 in August, the national statistics office CBS announced on Thursday. That is 5.4% of the working population.

It is the second month in a row that unemployment has risen, with the 25 to 45 age group particularly badly hit. In the first half of the year 170,000 people in this age group were out of work. The figure has risen to 186,000.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose 1% to 256,000, says the CBS.
