GroenLinks launches plan for a referendum on nuclear power
Left wing green party GroenLinks is planning to introduce draft legislation which will make it possible to hold a referendum on nuclear power, news agency ANP reports.
The draft legislation would make the referendum binding on the government, but would require at least 300,000 signatures before it could be held.
And a ban would only be binding if at least 30% of the electorate voted in favour. The plan focuses on planning permission not the principle of nuclear power, which means a change in the constitution would not be necessary, the party says.
The Netherlands has one nuclear power station but plans are in the pipeline for two more and the new government is keen to see nuclear power expanded.
