Golden coach must lose its ‘slavery’ painting
An ‘offensive’ painting on the side of the golden coach must be removed, according to two MPs, reports nrc.next.
The painting, Tribute of the Colonies, shows half-naked, dark-skinned men and women offering the riches of their country to Dutch royalty.
Harry van Bommel of the Socialist party and Mariko Peters of left-wing green party GroenLinks say they have a ‘great aversion’ to the painting. It is a reminder of slavery which was a dreadful period of Dutch history, they told the paper.
The panel should be removed and stored in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, according to the MPs.
The 19th century golden coach is used each year in September by the monarch to travel to parliament to deliver the traditional speech outlining the government’s plans for the coming year.
