First public hearings in Van der Sloot trial in Lima
Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch national suspected of killing vanished American teenager Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005, will appear in court in Lima on Monday, charged with the murder of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores.
According to the Telegraaf, this is the first public hearing in the case and will allow Van der Sloot’s lawyers to argue against the charges.
They say Van der Sloot should be charged with manslaughter, saying he killed Flores ‘out of violent emotion’.
Flores was found dead in a hotel room she shared with Van der Sloot on May 30, 2010, five years after Holloway’s disappearance.
