Dutch more negative about economy, but trust government

The number of people worried about the economy has gone up from 26% to 40% over the past three months, according the latest quarterly attitude report from the government’s social-cultural bureau SCP.

Another major concern is the effect of government cuts in spending on the health service, the research shows.
Nevertheless, just over half the population have faith in the government – support which is unchanged on the previous quarter. Trust in the unions is down from 70% to 61% – probably due to unhappiness about the pension reform, the SCP said.
Support for the EU is down. Just 39% are happy with the EU’s performance, down from 46% between April and June. And 42% think Dutch membership of the EU is a good thing, also down three percentage points.
Asked about the most pressing social problem facing the country, a large majority said the ‘lack of respect’ and increase in rudeness.
