Despite union position, deal reached on pension plan, says minister
Social affairs minister Henk Kamp told a news conference on Tuesday evening he is prepared to partly meet union objections to plans to reform the pension system.
Despite a 14 hour meeting overnight, unions affiliated to the FNV trade union federation were unable to reach agreement on supporting the reforms, which pave the way for an increase in the pension age to at least 66.
The government is keen to have union and employer agreement for the reforms, which will make them easier to implement.
Early retirement
Kamp told a news conference he is prepared to meet union objections to one part of the plan and will therefore increase opportunities for workers to save up cash to allow them to still retire early.
The unions were concerned that restrictions would hit low earners particularly hard.
The FNV will meet next Monday to discuss the compromise. Chairwoman Agnes Jongerius told news agency ANP she expected that too would lead to a ‘hefty discussion’.
