Cuts hit training to become a judge
Planned government cuts affecting the legal system will reduce the number of lawyers training to be judges, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Tuesday, quoting law council figures.
The cuts will reduce the number of places available to both newly-qualified lawyers and those with experience, the paper says
From 2012, there will be just 25 places for graduate trainees, compared with 60 a year at present. And there are now just 10 places available for experienced lawyers to train to become a judge, compared with 65 in 2010 and 95 in preceding years, the paper says.
Reinier van Zutphen of the national judges association, said the shortage will lead to capacity problems and longer waiting lists for court hearings.
