New inland waterway will save on CO2 emissions
A new inland waterway opened on Monday in Hook of Holland to link the docks to the fruit and vegetables growing areas of South Holland.
The waterway will allow the transport of import and export produce by water, saving between 20 and 100 kilometres of lorry journeys and lowering the emission of CO2, reports news agency ANP.
The waterway is part of a project to develop a network of terminals and connecting canals to take containers to and from the docks.
The project will cost €3m over three years and is being paid for jointly by the infrastructure ministry, South Holland province and the sector organisation Frugi Venta.
