Foreign minister praises Libyan people

Foreign affairs minister Uri Rosenthal said on Monday afternoon that Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi should surrender in order to avoid more bloodshed.

His remarks came as fighting continued in the centre of Tripoli. The Transitionary National Council confirmed two of Gaddafi’s sons, Seif al-Islam and Mohammed, have been detained, but there is no confirmation of whether Gaddafi is in his Tripoli compound or has fled abroad.
‘It is the Libyan people who have defeated Gaddafi and it is now time to give form to the democractic transition they have fought for,’ the minister said in a statement quoted in the press.
Earlier on Monday the International Court in The Hague said it wants Seif al-Islam to appear before it. He and his father are suspected of planning and participating in attacks on protesters.
The Netherlands has not officially recognised the Transitionary National Council but has said it considers it the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
