Els Borst awarded emancipation prize

Els Borst, former D66 health minister, is to receive the Aletta Jacobs prize for her work on emancipation, Groningen university announced on Monday.


She receives the prize for the ‘nuanced manner in which she brought questions of medical ethics into public debate and what she achieved by doing so’, says the university.
The 79-year-old was involved in government policy on drugs, tobacco, euthansia, embryo research, nutrition and alcohol use. Since she left politics, she has held many positions in the medical sector.
Aletta Jacobs was the first woman in the Netherlands to study at university and to practice as a doctor.
The prize will be presented on March 8.
